ASEAN’s digital economy turns from promise to policy as infrastructure bets accelerate

ASEAN’s digital economy story is no longer being written only in boardrooms and summit communiqués. It is now playing out in power grids, data centres, telecom networks and regulatory offices, where governments are deciding how fast the region can scale artificial intelligence without straining infrastructure or widening digital gaps.

According to AIBP, aibp.sg, the latest developments across Southeast Asia point to a clear shift: countries are moving from broad AI enthusiasm to the harder work of building the physical, legal and human foundations needed to support it. That includes everything from cross-border digital rules and sovereign AI models to tighter oversight of banks, mobile operators and data centre developers.
