Pertamina's Digital Revolution: Harnessing AI to Redefine Indonesia’s Energy Sector

AIBP had the chance to visit Pertamina’s Digital Hub this week to see the expanded scope of the INOVASI platform, the project that won the Data and AI category of our 2024 Enterprise Innovation Award. Hosted by Pak Ignatius Sigit Pratopo, SVP Pertamina Digital Hub, Pak Tatit Sri Jayendra, VP Digital Analytic Solution Management, Dr Joko Nugroho, Senior Expert Center of Excellence, and Yudi Ugahari, PIC Remote Surveillance & Command Center, the session provided insights into how artificial intelligence, data-driven processes, and organisational design support Pertamina’s ambition to become a leading force in energy innovation and digital sovereignty.

Strategic Foundations: The Digital Hub

Following an organisational restructuring approved in February 2025, Pertamina established a centralised Digital Hub comprising representatives from each of its six major sub-holdings: Upstream, Gas, Commercial and Trading, Electricity and Renewable Energy, Refinery and Petrochemical, and Shipping. Connected directly to corporate leadership, the Hub provides strategic alignment, agility, and integration across 264 business entities.

This transformation is anchored on three strategic pillars: Remote Surveillance, Digital Factory, and the Technical Orchestration Centre. Together, these pillars enable real-time operational oversight, data-driven decision-making, and seamless cross-functional collaboration, aligning digital initiatives with operational realities and business performance targets.

Leveraging AI and Computer Vision

Pertamina has significantly advanced operational safety and efficiency through AI and computer vision, enabling real-time detection of hazards and monitoring of worker safety and asset integrity. Predictive analytics supports early interventions, improving asset reliability. Pertamina is also developing multi-modal large language models tailored to oil and gas operations, offering real-time insights into fuel stock and distribution, public sentiment, and sales trends.

Digital Goals with Real Impact

Pertamina aims for a USD 300 million EBITDA contribution by 2027 directly resulting from digital investments. Prioritising proven technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning ensures measurable and immediate outcomes. Each digital initiative is commercially assessed, enhancing safety, reducing costs, or improving operational resilience.

Benchmarking Digital Capability Maturity Across Southeast Asia’s National Oil Companies

PETRONAS, under Datin Ts. Habsah Nordin, Head of the Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence established a robust digital foundation through its Enterprise Data Hub, significantly enhancing reporting efficiency. PTT’s decentralised structure empowers subsidiaries to drive innovation independently, with digital tools like GAIA supporting various domain-specific applications. Pertamina combines centralised coordination with sub-holding flexibility to maintain strategic alignment and operational relevance.

Sustainability and Renewable Energy Investments

Pertamina integrates digital capabilities into renewable energy initiatives, improving forecasting, maintenance planning, and investment governance. The company is actively expanding its 0.7 GW geothermal portfolio, has installed over 50 MWp of solar capacity, and explores hydrogen and biogas/biomass projects, supported by advanced digital tools.

Cultivating a Digital-Savvy Workforce

Human capital development remains central to Pertamina’s transformation. The Digital Hub uses a project-based structure, bringing together business leaders, digital analysts, and IT professionals to create operational solutions. With 26 core team members and plans for expansion, the Hub promotes a human-in-the-loop approach, ensuring automation complements rather than replaces human judgement.

Navigating Challenges, Securing Success

Despite significant progress, Pertamina faces challenges common across the region, including the shortage of tailored AI models, the need for high-quality curated datasets, and transitioning from static to dynamic decision platforms. These challenges are systematically addressed through disciplined governance, internal capability building, and continuous improvement, underscored by leadership and accountability.

Conclusion: Leading the Future of Oil and Gas

Pertamina’s digital transformation represents a comprehensive reimagining of organisational operations and value delivery. By integrating digital capabilities, Pertamina drives efficiency, enhances sustainability, and leads Indonesia’s energy transition. Through regional collaborations and strategic alignment, Pertamina positions itself as resilient and future-ready, poised to navigate complexity and support sustainable growth.
